In March 2007, ENWAGS organized a three-day sports festival
in the rural village of Grafton, having as its theme ‘Our Right to Recreation’. Women and girls competed in volleyball,
football and athletics. The ‘fun and participatory’ aspect of the games was emphasized and thus attracted many
of them. It was successful and the very next day, more women and girls were enrolling in the various groups that had been
established in the location. An HIV/ Aids prevention message was delivered on each of the 3 days during intervals. This is
a very important aspect of our ‘Sports for Development’ program. Development and growth in Sierra Leone will be
hampered if HIV/ Aids continues to increase. Women and girls are the most at risk and therefore it is necessary to use every
opportunity especially at informal occasions to bring about awareness on this disease.
