ENWAGS’ mission is ‘to
promote sport, recreation and physical activity for women and girls at all levels, to ensure that they have opportunities
to participate in sporting activities in a supportive environment that maintains the rights and dignity of the individual;
and to use sport as a tool for developing in them life skills and values for development.’
ENWAGS believes that through participation in sport,
recreation and physical activity, women can be empowered to make their own meaningful contribution to the socio-economic development
of Sierra Leone. It recognizes that sustainable human development in Sierra Leone is a prerequisite for national development
and believes that sport can be used as a medium to impart those essential and workforce skills and values that can bring about
sustainable human development.
Sierra Leone’s National Youth Policy recognizes that youth have a right to
leisure, cultural and sport activities and a right to live in a good and healthy environment. One of the effects of the ten-year
civil war in Sierra Leone has been to leave women and girls marginalized, lacking basic education and skills for employment.
Though great strides have been made in the provision of education for the girl child, sport and physical activity have been
to a great extent neglected in their lives. Sport is still seen as a male culture and there is a lack of understanding as
to the health, social and development benefits that can accrue to women and girls who actively participate in sport, recreation
and physical activity. Cultural beliefs and lack of sports facilities have also hindered women and girls’ access to
sport. Many girls from low -income families living in heavily populated disadvantaged urban areas, especially in Freetown
drop out of school because of unplanned pregnancies bringing their education to an abrupt halt. ENWAGS believes
that introducing sport to this category of young women can help to reduce teenage pregnancy.
